Learning Cross Stitch for Beginners: First Steps

The first time I held a tapestry needle, I was completely lost. I had just bought an embroidery kit at random, without the slightest idea of what I was doing. The thread kept tangling. The fabric kept slipping. My stitches looked like chaotic knots rather than neat little crosses. I put my project away in a drawer for six months.

If you're reading this, you might be in the same situation. Don't worry: learning cross stitch as a beginner is easier than it seems. With the right materials and a few tips, you'll complete your first embroidery in the very first afternoon.

What Exactly Is Cross Stitch?

Cross stitch is an embroidery technique where each stitch forms an X on the fabric. It's the foundation of many projects, and the first step if you want to learn how to start needlepoint. Each cross corresponds to one square on the chart. Simple, right?

Yet many people confuse this technique with others. I explain everything in my article on the difference between cross stitch and needlepoint. But remember this: cross stitch is smaller, more precise. Needlepoint uses wider stitches, often diagonal.

The Materials You'll Need

No need to empty your bank account. To get started, here's what you need:

1. A Suitable Fabric

Choose Aida fabric. It's the easiest for beginners. The squares are clearly visible. Count on about 8 to 12 EUR per meter at fabric stores. The ideal size to start: 20 x 20 cm, which is about 4 to 5 EUR worth of fabric.

Aida fabric comes in different counts (number of threads per inch). To start, choose 7 count (7 stitches per inch): the holes are wide, you can clearly see where to stitch. Later, you can move up to 11 or 14 count.

2. Suitable Needles

Get DMC tapestry needles, model n°24 or n°26 DMC Tapestry Needle. Their rounded tip pushes the fabric threads apart without piercing them. A pack costs about 3 to 5 EUR and will last you for years.

Caution: never use sharp needles. They pierce through the fabric threads and damage your work.

3. DMC Embroidery Floss

DMC embroidery floss is the world reference. Each skein contains 6 detachable strands. For cross stitch on Aida 7 count, use 2 or 3 strands depending on the desired thickness.

One skein costs about 2.30 EUR and measures 8.7 meters DMC Embroidery Floss. With a single skein, you can embroider about 700 to 800 stitches on 7 count fabric.

For larger projects, know that Laine Colbert DMC for needlepoint is thicker and perfect for large-hole canvases.

4. An Embroidery Hoop

A 15 cm diameter hoop costs about 6 to 8 EUR. It keeps your fabric taut and your stitches remain uniform.

First Stitches: Step by Step

Step 1: Prepare the Thread

Cut about 50 cm of thread. No more: any longer and the thread will tangle and wear out. Gently separate the required number of strands. To start, take 2 strands.

Claire's tip: Run each strand separately between your fingers before joining them together. This removes twists and your thread will lie flat.

Step 2: Start Without a Knot

Here's the mistake I made for months: I tied knots on the back of the fabric. Result: my work was bumpy and ugly. The right method is the sliding thread method.

Insert your needle from front to back, 2 cm from the starting point. Leave a 2 cm thread tail at the front. As you stitch your first few stitches, you'll cover this tail with the following stitches. It will be held in place without a knot.

Step 3: Make Your First Stitch

Bring the needle up at the bottom left of the square (hole 1). Insert it at the top right (hole 2). You have a half-stitch (a diagonal). Bring it up at the top left (hole 3). Insert it at the bottom right (hole 4). The cross is complete.

Repeat for each square on the chart, always in the same direction. The first diagonal from left to right, the second from right to left.

Step 4: Rows

Embroider a row of half-stitches from left to right, then come back from right to left to close the crosses. This is faster and your stitches will all be slanted in the same direction. A clean finish.

Quick test: On a 10 x 10 cm square of Aida 7 count, you should take about 15 to 20 minutes. If it takes longer, breathe. Speed comes with practice.

How to Read a Needlepoint Chart

This is what scares many beginners. Yet how to read a needlepoint chart can be learned in 5 minutes.

A chart is a grid. Each square = one cross stitch. The symbols inside indicate the thread color. The legend links each symbol to a DMC reference.

For example, the symbol ★ might correspond to DMC 310 (black). The symbol ■ to DMC 666 (bright red).

Start from the center of the chart. Look for the arrows that indicate the center. Embroider the outlines of the pattern first, then fill in. This is easier than stitching in rows from top to bottom.

My Beginner Mistake (and How to Avoid It)

I wanted to embroider an entire cushion for my first time. A complex pattern with 15 colors. Result: 40 hours of work, tangled threads, and a mediocre finish.

My frustration was immense. I almost threw everything away.

Don't do what I did. Start with a small pattern: 10 x 10 cm, 3 to 4 colors maximum. You'll finish it in 4 to 6 hours. The satisfaction will be far greater.

How Long for a Project?

Here are some general guidelines:

Project Size Estimated Time
Bookmark 5 x 20 cm 3 to 5 hours
Small picture 15 x 15 cm 10 to 15 hours
Cushion 30 x 30 cm 30 x 30 cm 30 to 50 hours
Tapestry 40 x 50 cm 40 x 50 cm 80 to 120 hours

These times vary depending on your speed and the complexity of the pattern. Don't compare yourself to the stitchers posting on social media. They've been stitching for ten years.
