Cross Stitch vs Needlepoint: What Are the Differences?

I'm often asked what the difference is between these two techniques. At first glance, they look alike. You use a needle, thread, a fabric. You form small patterns. Yet everything sets them apart.

After 8 years of practicing both methods, I can tell you they are two different worlds. Cross stitch is a precise discipline, almost mathematical. Needlepoint is freer, more textured, more generous.
This guide helps you choose based on your preferences, your budget, and the time you have available.
The Real Difference
Cross stitch forms an X. Two diagonals that cross. Each stitch occupies one square of the fabric.
Needlepoint (continental stitch) forms a single diagonal. A slanted half-stitch. Each stitch occupies one thread intersection on the canvas.
It's very simple, but this difference changes absolutely everything.
Visual comparison: Cross stitch looks like a grid of square pixels. Needlepoint looks like a weave of tight diagonals. One is geometric, the other is textile.

The Canvas: The First Big Choice
| Criteria | Cross Stitch | Needlepoint (Continental) |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended fabric | Aida | Mono |
| Typical count | 7, 11, 14 ct | 10, 12, 14 ct |
| Price | 8-12 EUR/m | 10-14 EUR/m |
| Hole visibility | Very good | Good |
| Stiffness | Medium | High |
Aida fabric is structured in squares. Each square has 4 clearly visible holes. It's perfect for counting stitches. Beginners adopt it easily.
Mono canvas is an interlacement of threads. The holes are the spaces between the threads. It's more flexible, closer to a real fabric.

Yarn and Thread
Cross Stitch: DMC Embroidery Floss
DMC embroidery floss is made of 6 detachable strands. Each skein measures 8.7 meters and costs about 2.30 EUR.
Depending on the fabric:
- On Aida 7 count: 3 strands
- On Aida 11 count: 2 strands
- On Aida 14 count: 1 or 2 strands
Needlepoint: Laine Colbert DMC
Laine Colbert DMC is a thick thread, 100% merino wool. Each skein measures 10 meters and costs about 3.50 EUR.
It is used as a single strand on mono canvas 10 or 12 count.
Price difference for a 25 x 25 cm project:
| Item | Cross Stitch | Needlepoint |
|---|---|---|
| Canvas | 3 EUR | 4 EUR |
| Thread/yarn | 10 EUR (6 skeins) | 25 EUR (7 skeins) |
| Needles | 4 EUR | 4 EUR |
| Total | 17 EUR | 33 EUR |
Needlepoint costs more, but the result is thicker, richer, more durable.

Time Spent
This is the question everyone asks. How long for the same pattern?
Let's take a simple 25 x 25 cm pattern on suitable fabric:
In cross stitch (Aida 11 count):
- 110 stitches per direction = 12,100 stitches total
- Average speed: 15 stitches per minute
- Total estimated time: 13 to 15 hours
In needlepoint (mono 10 count):
- 100 stitches per direction = 10,000 stitches
- Average speed: 20 stitches per minute
- Total estimated time: 8 to 10 hours
Needlepoint is faster. The continental stitch is quicker to execute than the full cross stitch. You save about 30 to 40% of time.
But speed isn't everything. Some people prefer the slower pace of cross stitch, which is more meditative.
Difficulty
Many think cross stitch is easier because it's better known. That's true for the first stitches. But the difficulty changes with the complexity of the pattern.
Difficulty of Cross Stitch
- Changing color often: each change requires stopping and restarting
- Counting squares on complex patterns: one miscount and everything has to be redone
- Metallic or specialty threads: difficult to handle
Difficulty of Needlepoint
- Managing yarn tension: too tight and the canvas buckles
- Finishing: harder to hide than in cross stitch
- The tapestry frame: some find it cumbersome
The different needlepoint stitches offer more technical variety. But cross stitch requires more rigor in counting. To each their own strengths.
The Chart: How Does It Work?
Both techniques use a chart. But the reading isn't exactly the same.
In cross stitch: each square = one X. Simple and direct.
In needlepoint: each square = one diagonal. You have to imagine the slant in your head.
To learn, read how to read a needlepoint chart. The basics are the same, but the nuances make the difference.
The Finishing
The final result is very different.
Cross stitch gives a flat, uniform, almost digital appearance. Ideal for geometric patterns, letters, video game characters.
Needlepoint gives a textured, thick appearance, close to real weaving. Perfect for landscapes, portraits, floral patterns.
I stitched the same cat in cross stitch and needlepoint. Cross stitch made its fur look flat, almost cartoonish. Needlepoint gave volume, relief, like real fur. The difference was striking.

The Anti-Stress Aspect
Both techniques are relaxing, but not in the same way.
Cross stitch requires concentration. Counting. Checking. Recounting. It's a form of active meditation. The brain is occupied, worries fade away.
Needlepoint is more mechanical. The motion is repetitive, almost hypnotic. Anti-stress needlepoint allows your mind to wander while your hands work.
My experience: After a difficult day, I choose needlepoint. Its broad, regular movements soothe me in 15 minutes. Cross stitch demands more attention — I save it for quiet weekends.
Summary Table
| Criteria | Cross Stitch | Needlepoint |
|---|---|---|
| Stitch shape | X | Diagonal |
| Fabric | Aida | Mono |
| Thread | DMC floss (2.30 EUR) | Laine Colbert (3.50 EUR) |
| Project cost 25 cm | ~17 EUR | ~33 EUR |
| Time for 25 cm | 13-15 h | 8-10 h |
| Result | Flat, precise | Textured, thick |
| Beginner difficulty | Easy | Easy to medium |
| Ideal for | Patterns, letters | Landscapes, portraits |
So, Which One to Choose?
If you're a complete beginner: start with cross stitch. The materials are cheaper, the fabric is easier to understand, mistakes are easier to fix.
If you want a more textile, more "old tapestry" result: choose needlepoint. Laine Colbert is a joy to work with.
If you have a photo you want to reproduce: needlepoint gives a better result. The wool gradients render better than the pixels of embroidery floss.
